Celebrate Black History Month and Women’s History Month with your family!
Historian and storyteller Tammy Denease will take audiences on a journey as she portrays Bessie Coleman, the first African American woman to ever become an internationally licensed pilot. You will go on a voyage that begins in the segregated south of the United States, where the color of your skin could determine whether you lived or died, all the way to France, where self-determination - not skin color or gender - was what truly mattered.
Event takes place at the Weston History & Culture Center at 104 Weston Road in Weston, CT. Parking and entrance is accessed from High Acre Road. Show will take place in the Visitor’s Center, red building adjacent to parking lot. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for March 23, 2024.
About the Presenter: Tammy Denease was born in Columbus, Mississippi where she spent countless hours with her great-grandmother and grandmother. Her great-grandmother was a former enslaved person and her grandmother lived to be a 100. Both were known storytellers and passed this gift along to their granddaughter. Tammy loves history and being able to tell others about the past. As the director of The Hidden Women Stage Company, Tammy produces other historical plays that bring to life women “hidden” in history. In her position of Museum Educator, Tammy instructs children through stories of Colonial History, Health, Medicine, Slavery and Native History. In addition, Tammy is a historical tour guide for local Colonial-American homes.
When Tammy is not teaching, she is a playwright, Director and a Diversity Trainer for an International organization. As the Outreach Director for the Connecticut Freedom Trail, Tammy helps historical sites to interpret their inclusive historical stories. Tammy is also a Historical Consultant, supporting libraries, schools, theaters, historical sites, and corporations across the country. She is also a Museum Educator and Historical Tour Guide, and she brings history to life through her captivating and thought-provoking stories of colonial history, health, medicine, from enslavement to freedom, and Indigenous People. She is dedicated to educating and inspiring organizations to appreciate and value the stories and contributions of all historical figures.
